Environmental & Social Impact Assessments

An Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) is a critical decision-making tool for promoting sustainable development. We help developers identify and manage potential environmental and social impacts, minimise risks, and enhance the positive benefits of their projects. Our approach ensures that the ESIAs support compliance with applicable national legislation and international good industry practice,
while fostering meaningful stakeholder engagement and strengthening a project’s social license to operate.

Case Study:

We were subcontracted by the main Environmental and Social Consultant to undertake an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment for the proposed Kampala City Roads and Bridges Upgrade Project (KCRBUP) to meet the lender’s requirements, which typically were the International Finance Corporation (IFC) Performance
Standards and Equator Principles. The assignment also entailed developing supporting documentation such as the Environmental and
Social Management System and Livelihood Restoration Framework.
Upon completion of the ESIA studies, the additional tasks entailed closing actions with the Pre-Financing Environmental and Social Action Plan to position the project for financing.

Solution:

We formed a multidisciplinary team with specialists spanning the physical, biological, and social environments. Undertook monitoring
campaigns for noise and air quality as opposed to spot/short term sampling, and leveraged our understanding of the IFC Performance Standards to ensure that all requirements were satisfactorily met. In
addition, we also developed a range of environmental and social management plans for easier management of the different environmental and social risks attributed to the project.

Success point

The environmental and social documentation was deemed satisfactory by the Independent Environmental and Social Consultant (IESC) and
the lenders, subsequently leading to project financing.
